A Multi-Purposed Performing Facility with An Urban Plaza

Tutor: Dr. Takazi Okuda • Spring 2013 • Studio with Distinction

The project proposes a new performing centre for both campus and community in an urban setting. It functions not only as an intimate event environment for the exclusive showing and discussion of art, but also a gathering place in which students, artists, visitors and community meet one another. Much like a new building of community corridor cross the street which can serve the student activity, this new facility will also cater to a more wide ranged people with an avid interest in experimental and avant-garde art explorations by lesser known artists from the community.

URBAN THRESHOLD

The proposal functions not only as a reception place for arriving students and visitors but also a starting place for gateway of the campus and even community, playing as urban threshold. The centre is more than an avid admirer of architecture, but is very interested in architecture as a way to create gathering people energy; but also creating a sense of light and space and educating the public in the basics of design with university communities.

In addition to the educational aspects of this facility, the program includes a outdoor/indoor performing facility that promotes event exhibitions for the local community, making the university and neighborhood place for the community activity.

OUTDOOR SPACE | EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE

With the campus’s reputation as a place steeped in the history and heritage, and within this dynamic socio-cultural realm in community, the project enhances the sense of place as a part of the public realm and a part of the broader contextual realm - socially, culturally, as well as architecturally. Providing a wide range of outdoor space encourages the community to perform, share and gather for any kind of activities that is a barometer of the cultural and social zeitgeist on campus; eventually being a place where all artistic forms coexist and intermingle.
